With Milwaukee schools starting in September, All My Sons want to honor the pursuit of knowledge by giving a crash course in Milwaukee history. Local Milwaukee movers sum up the history of how Milwaukee came to be, with key historical events that have effectively created the Milwaukee home that you love.
-In 1830, settlers moved to the promising town site and natural harbor of the western shore of Lake Michigan, where they founded three rival settlements- Juneautown, Kilbourntown, and Walker’s Point. They fought a small scale civil war over bridges and in 1846, cooler heads prevailed and all three sides came together to make the Milwaukee hometown you live in today.
-Milwaukee rose to early prominence as a trader of grain and shipping wheat. Shipping was joined by processing industries, one of which is Milwaukee’s many infamous breweries.
-In the 1800’s, manufacturing became the city’s lifeblood and jobs in the metal-bending industries attracted tens of thousands of German, Irish, Polish, Italian, Greek, and Jewish. This accounts for the large melting pot culture of Milwaukee.
-Milwaukee became a big city and they developed big city problems. Political corruption was the worst under Mayor David Rose (“All the Time Rosy”), where the city became an officially sanctioned vice and people became deterred from moving to Milwaukee.
-In 1910, Milwaukee became the only major city in America to turn its government into creative, thrifty, and absolutely incorruptible Socialists. Milwaukee is one of the best governed communities in the country.
-Milwaukee is now home to world class festivals, a downtown renaissance and the rise of truly global diversity all set in one of the most livable cities in America.
